Jack T. Fryer, Sr.

Jack Thomas Fryer Sr., of Little Rock, landed safely on the shores of Heaven comfortably from his home Friday, January 2nd. Jack was born to loving parents Vickie Agnes and Roy Thomas Fryer June first 1918 in Morrilton AR. He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother Don Kenneth Fryer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 67 years, Alice Bishop Fryer. Sister Barbara Davis of North Little Rock and Sister in law Rose Fryer of Conway. Five sons, Jack Jr., Gary, Doyne, Granville and daughter in law Betsy Beene Fryer and Bobby his faithful companion and caregiver. Grandchildren Tracy Fryer and her mother Mimi, Aylette Roper and husband Greg, Charlotte (Cissy) Miller and husband Ty, Dusty Fryer and wife Juliana, Alice (Allie) Moses and husband Jonathan, and Wesley Fryer. Great Grandchildren Ada Ellis Roper, Bart Roper USMC, Andrew Gardner, Aiden and Ireland Miller and Nichole Fryer. Jack Sr. played varsity football and basketball at Morrilton High and Hendrix College before being drafted in to WWII. He piloted a B17 in missions over Germany. He served with the 8th and 3rd Air Force and was awarded the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After completing his service he entered the retail furniture business owning and operating Battery Street Furniture and later Jack T. Fryer Furniture on W. 7th Street, an area know at the time as "Furniture Row". He was a Hot Point Distributor and a pioneer in extending credit to "all Gods children" for household appliances and furniture. Later he went into business with his sons as a manufacturer's representative for Chromcraft Dinettes and Colony Furniture. Eventually he retired to play golf, fish and enjoy his large family. Jack Sr. and Alice were early members of the Upper Room Class at Pulaski Heights United Methodists Church and later, charter members of St. James United Methodist Church in Pleasant Valley. Jack Sr. and Alice enjoyed golf and friendship over the years as members of Western Hills CC, Riverdale CC and charter members of Pleasant Valley CC. Jack Sr. was a member of the Arkansas Home Furnishings Association and Arkansas Roadrunners Association. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the many friends of Alice and Jack Sr. for their thoughtfulness and kindness especially over recent years. Also to Dr. Drew Kumpuris, the social workers and caregivers of Arkansas Hospice and Lutzia Roberts with Gentiva Services. A memorial service will be held at Pulaski Heights United Methodists Church, 4823 Woodlawn Ave., Little Rock Arkansas, 72205. Friday, January 9th 2009 at 10am. A reception will be held at this location afterward. Graveside internment 2pm that afternoon at Elmwood Cemetery, Morrilton AR., will be conducted by Harris Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers are Ben Scroggins, Charlie Hoover, Fred Bates, and the all the "old pards" at the Pleasant Valley Country Club Mens grill and pro shop. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shalom Zone at Pulaski Heights United Methodists Church, St. James United Methodists Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Dr., Little Rock, Arkansas 72212 or Arkansas Hospice www.arkansashospice.org.
